| Prescribed by regulations for officers of the Union Army, this overcoat is influenced by those worn in the French Army. Specimens are rare because many officers opted to wear the less conspicuous sky-blue coats of the rank and file.
Colonel Carmen started as Lt. Colonel of the 7th New Jersey Volunteers under General Phillip Kearny and was quickly promoted to Colonel of the 13th Regiment. He fought at Antietam, and Gettysburg and in 1865 was breveted Brigadier General "for gallant and meritorious services." |
