| This pair of well-used shoes were worn by Gilbert J. Bentley of Company B, 37th Massachusetts Volunteers. Bentley was one of three brothers in the same company that joined from the town of Monterey, Mass. He was wounded April 2, 1865 in the assault of Petersburg and discharged as of a result of his injuries. Most pairs having been worn out, enlisted man's shoes from the Civil War are very rare. |
